I read a lot of books. Between BookTok recommendations, celebrity book clubs, and whatever is trending on the bestseller list, I easily consume 40-50 books a year.
But if I am being completely honest? Most of them are just entertainment. They are fun to read, but they don’t actually stick with me. Once in a while, though, I pick up a book that fundamentally shifts the way I view my life, my relationships, or my habits.
These are the 5 non-fiction books I read this year that actually changed my perspective. No fluff, no toxic positivity—just genuinely life-altering insights. I highly recommend picking up physical copies of these so you can highlight and annotate them.
(You can find all of these books, plus my favorite reading accessories, on my Amazon Storefront).
1. The Book That Changed How I View Time

Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman
If you constantly feel like you are falling behind, or if your to-do list gives you actual anxiety, you need to read this immediately. The premise is simple: the average human lifespan is roughly 4,000 weeks. That’s it.
Instead of giving you more “productivity hacks” to squeeze more work into your day, this book gives you permission to accept that you will never get everything done. It completely cured my toxic obsession with productivity.
2. The Book That Changed My Friendships

Platonic by Marisa G. Franco
We talk endlessly about romantic relationships, but very rarely do we discuss the science of making and keeping friends as adults. This book explains why making friends in your 30s feels so hard (hint: it’s not just you) and gives actual, actionable advice on how to build deep, platonic intimacy.
It made me realize I needed to stop waiting for people to invite me to things and start being the “initiator” in my friend group.
3. The Book That Changed My Habits

Atomic Habits by James Clear
Okay, I know this one is viral, but it is viral for a reason. I used to rely entirely on “motivation” to get things done. When I wasn’t motivated, my routines fell apart.
This book taught me that motivation is garbage. It is all about systems. The concept of “habit stacking” (pairing a new habit you want to build with an existing habit you already do) is the only reason I consistently take my vitamins and read before bed now.
4. The Book That Changed How I Handle Stress

Burnout by Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski
This book completely reframed how I understand stress. The authors explain that dealing with the stressor (the thing causing you stress, like a work deadline) is entirely different from dealing with the stress itself (the physiological response in your body).
It taught me how to “complete the stress cycle” physically so that my body knows it is safe. If you constantly feel exhausted even when you are resting, this is mandatory reading.
5. The Book That Changed My Relationship with Money
The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel
I have always found personal finance books incredibly boring and intimidating. This book is different. It is not about math or stock picking; it is about how your ego, your childhood, and your emotions dictate how you spend and save.
It helped me stop making impulsive emotional purchases and start viewing my savings as “buying my future freedom” rather than just hoarding cash.
